FLORIDA TEEN FILMMAKER RELEASES COMMISSIONED 9/11 SHORT-FILM 'RECONCILIATION’
Pinecrest High School student Lance Oppenheim announces the release of his first commissioned short film, Reconciliation. He directed and co-produced this 9/11 documentary, which is based on the stories of three Pinecrest connections with direct ties back to September 11th. The film made its online debut just four months after the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The Hands On Network, one of the largest volunteer networks in the country, provided Oppenheim with a grant to make the film. It was also supported by GenerationOn, a global youth service organization. Along with his film class, he spent hours interviewing three people with ties to the school, each whom have different, yet interwoven, perspectives of 9/11. Michael Testa, now a teacher, was a performer at the New York City Opera, which was about to open its season. Pinecrest parent Janet Roy's brother was a celebrated captain in the FDNY who was called to duty that morning. Charlie Cobb, an alumnus, lived and worked close to Ground Zero and found himself thrust into the center of the chaos. more...

NEW STARLITE FILM FESTIVAL TO SPOTLIGHT MICROBUDGET MOVIES
It's the week for film-festival previews. I already wrote about the Florida Film Festival's preview; on Tuesday night, I checked out the preview of a new fest called the Starlite Film Festival. The twist to this festival: All of the features presented were made on a budget of $100,000 or less. Its tagline: "Big films. Micro-budgets." Hosted and produced by Garden Theatre in Winter Garden, the Starlite Film Festival will take place Feb. 2-5. more...

FLORIDA FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES GOLDEN TICKET CONTEST
The Florida Film Festival season kicked off Wednesday night in Maitland at Enzian Theater's Eden Bar with the unveiling of the this year's logo and theme. The logo for the festival, the 21st, marries 1950s-60s-looking smiley folks with film iconography. Probably of more interest to patrons was the announcement of the Golden Ticket contest. (Remember the Golden Ticket from "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"?) After buying a 2012 Florida Film Festival ticket package or pass, a patron's name will be entered into a random drawing. Every other Tuesday, starting Jan. 24, a winner will be drawn at random from the names of all who have purchased festival ticket packages or passes. The contest rewards early birds: The sooner you purchase a package, the more drawings you are a part of, and the better your chances of winning. more...
