WIFF FEATURES AN EVENING WITH RUBY DEE, A CONVERSATION WITH ADRIANA BARRAZA THIS WEEKEND!

The Women’s International Film Festival (WIFF) has announced its 2007 line-up, which includes 40 films from over 12 countries. The festival, scheduled for March 29th through April 1st enters its second year of showcasing feature films, documentaries and shorts by and about the lives of women from the US and around the world.

“We are especially honored and pleased to have actress and director Ruby Dee and 2007 Oscar Nominee for Babel Adrianna Barraza, joining us this year as true notables in both the mainstream and the independent film world," noted Yvonne McCormack, Executive Director of WIFF.

Some of the documentaries at the festival include the U.S. premiere of As Old as My Tongue, a documentary from Tanzania about the living legend, Bi Kidude, from the island of Zanzibar; Jamesie King of Scratch directed by Andrea Leland, who will be attending the festival, which focuses on Scratch band music, an indigenous, grass-roots form of folk music from the Virgin Islands; Mr. Postman/ Mi Casa es tu Casa directed by Madeleine Bond, which captures the hopes and dreams of four postmen from four continents: Mexico, Japan, Zimbabwe and Denmark; and the US Premiere of Counting Headz: South Afrika’s Sistaz in Hip Hop, directed by Erin Offer and Vusi Magubane.

Some of the shorts being screened include: 2007 Oscar Nominee, Binta and the Great Idea, a Spanish short about a 7-year-old girl who lives in a small village in southern Senegal; Arranging Love a short documentary directed by Sheila Jayadev which explores the realities of the arranged marriage for second generation Indians living in Australia and Zoe’s Day a short film directed by Rebecca Gwynne that chronicles what should have been a typical afternoon for seven-year-old Zoe, played by Ruby Jerins (ABC’s Six Degrees) in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

In total, the festival will showcase 32 shorts, 8 feature documentaries and 4 premiers: As Old As My Tongue from Tanzania; Haenyo, a World Premiere short film from South Korea; The Manual a narrative short from Australia and Counting Headz: South Afrika's Sistaz in Hip Hop from South Africa.

In the continuing effort to promote women in the industry as a whole, WIFF will also present various specialized programs during the 4-day event including: An evening with Ruby Dee; three workshops: The Business of Documentary Filmmaking, A Day in the Life of Industry Leaders and Women in Film and Media in Miami. And WIFF will conclude the festival with an Awards Luncheon & Special Engagement featuring A Conversation with Adrianna Barraza.

Screenings will be held throughout Miami, at The Lyric Theatre, Miami Beach Cinematheque, AMC 16 Theaters CocoWalk in Coconut Grove and at the Byron Carlyle Theatre.
