ALTERNATIVE FINANCING FOR DOCUMENTARIES
Author of A Bread Crumb Trail Through the PBS Jungle: The Producer’s Survival Guide, Patric Hedlund, examines the age old question: How can an independent producer make a living creating documentary programs for pubic television?The Bread Crumb Trail book contains resources such as interviews with key programming executives, acronym decoder, public broadcast funding chart, and real world case examples including interviews with successful producers. Several university film courses have adopted this book.

FILM ARTS FOUNDATION GRANTS
Created in 1984, the goal of the Film Arts Foundation Grants Program is to encourage new and diverse works by film and video artists who have little likelihood of being supported through traditional funding sources. These awards are targeted for film and videomakers in categories that are among the most difficult areas in which to raise money for media projects.Grant Categories include: Cash Award: Personal Works- These grants are for artist-made films or videos that can be completed with the grant amount. Cash Award: Development- Awarded for projects in the development and fundraising stages. Cash Award: Completion/Distribution- Awarded to artists who demonstrate a need for this amount to complete fully and/or distribute a film or video. Robin Eickman Screenwriting Award- Provides professional consultation with a screenwriting consultant, screenwriting software, and a cash prize of $4,000 for a feature-length (75-125 pages) screenplay. HOLLYWOOD GATEWAY SCREENWRITING CONTEST
The Hollywood Gateway Screenwriting Contest provides every writer with the opportunity to have his or her screenplay judged by a Hollywood development executive.SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Early Bird Entry by June 30, 2003 for an Early Bird fee of $35. Contest Deadline is August 31, 2003 with a standard entry fee of $40. Late Entrants have until September 30, 2003 for a late entry fee of $50. TYPES OF MATERIALS: Screenplays 80-140 pages. INDEPENDENT TELEVISION SERVICE (ITVS)
ITVS funds distributes and promotes new programs primarily for public television. They work with independent producers to create and present programs that take creative risks, advance issues and represent points of view not usually seen on public or commercial television. Two sources of funding include: 1) Local Independents Collaborating with Stations (LInCS) Fund Incentive or matching money to create partnerships between public television stations and independent producers. Projects in any genre or stage of development will be considered. 2) Open Call 2002 Round 2 Looking for fresh programs that will bring new audiences to public television to expand civil participation by bringing new voices into the public discourse. THE CHESTERFIELD WRITER’S FILM PROJECT
The Writer’s Film Project offers fiction, theater, and film writers the chance to begin a career in screenwriting.WFP writers are chosen by competition, and evaluated on the basis of their dramatic writing samples. Selected writers form a screenwriting workshop in Los Angeles, using their storytelling skills to begin a career in film. Up to 5 writers are chosen to participate, and each will receive a stipend to cover living expenses. There are no strict eligibility requirements- there are no academic requirements and applicants need not be affiliated with a university to participate. THE DON AND GEE NICHOLL FELLOWSHIPS IN SCREENWRITING
The Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting program is an international competition open to screenwriters who have not earned more than $5,000 writing for film or television. Entry scripts must be the original work of a sole author or of exactly two collaborative authors. Entries must have been written originally in English. Adaptation and translated scripts are not eligible. THE ROY W. DEAN 2003 EDITING GRANT A $100,000 editing grant sponsored by Digital Media Education Center of Portland Oregon. This grant is a donation of services. UNCF/RICHARD E. NORMAN SCHOLARSHIP FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN CINEMA
The UNCF/Norman Scholarship for African American Cinema is an effort to preserve and celebrate Florida´s filmmaking tradition. In partnership with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and the American Black Film Festival, and the Governor´s Office of Film & Entertainment, the UNCF/Norman Scholarship will provide financial assistance to three deserving students from a Florida-based UNCF institution to use towards a film school education at one of the participating Florida film schools.
