THE SARASOTA FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTS “PROJECTIONS: SUMMER LAUGHS AND LOVES” A SERIES OF FREE OUTDOOR
7/14/2003
The Sarasota Film Festival presents Projections: Summer Loves and Laughs, a series of three free outdoor film screenings. SFF is taking to the streets with something for everyone this summer -the family classic THE PARENT TRAP at Greenbrook Adventure Park in Lakewood Ranch, the independent hit LOVE AND BASKETBALL at the Newtown Community Center and one of cinema’s timeless comedies SOME LIKE IT HOT as part of Friday Fest at the Van Wezel. Films will be projected on a mobile, state-of-the-art LED display provided by New Millennium Media International with rear projection for clear visibility in daylight. All Projections screenings are free and open to the public. Projections offers a unique summer activity for families and neighbors in a relaxed setting. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Snacks and refreshing beverages will be available for purchase from local vendors. All Projections screenings begin at 7:30 p.m. at their appointed location and offer audience members an opportunity to socialize while watching fun films that unite and inspire. The Projections series is designed to provide access to patrons who may be unable to attend the annual Festival due to cost, schedule and location, according to Sarasota Film Festival Outreach Coordinator Hans Wohlgefahrt. The Projections Summer Loves and Laughs series includes: THE PARENT TRAP, a Disney classic from 1961, is first in the lineup. Recommended for all audiences, it is the story of estranged twins who meet at summer camp and attempt to reunite their divorced parents. This film, starring Hayley Mills as both twins, was among the first to use split screen editing and serves as a benchmark for Disney live action films. The Parent Trap will be shown on July 23, 2003 at Greenbrook Adventure Park in Lakewood Ranch. LOVE AND BASKETBALL is next in the lineup. Produced by Spike Lee, it’s the story of Monica and Quincy, childhood neighbors and best friends who share a common love of the sport -and eventually each other. The story follows their independent journeys to the top, and the different standard male and female athletes face. Their challenges question whether love and basketball can co-exist. Love and Basketball will be shown on July 28, 2003 at the Newtown Community Center on 34th Street in Sarasota. And finally, we present Some Like It Hot, the classic 1959 film starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, and Tony Curtis that won an Academy Award-nomination for legendary director Billy Wilder. In this comedic gem, two struggling musicians (Lemmon and Curtis) witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre and try to find a way out of the city to escape a mob hit. The only job that will pay their way is a gig with an all girl band bound for Florida. The two men dress up as women and each has his own problems; one falls for another band member but can't tell her his gender, and the other has a rich suitor who will not take "No," for an answer. Don’t miss this screening, presented in partnership with Friday Fest at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on August 1, 2003. Sarasota Film Festival Executive Director Jody Kielbasa has been eager to inaugurate a summertime film series for Sarasota audiences since the Festival’s inception, “We’re excited to launch this series with the potential to become a summertime institution in Sarasota.” Outreach Coordinator Hans Wohlgefahrt, who is eager to introduce the Festival to new audiences and expand the organization’s community outreach initiative, adds, “Projections is a great way for the public to view important films in a relaxed, casual atmosphere. Encouraging cinematic knowledge in a fun way is what the Sarasota Film Festival is all about.” Projections is sponsored by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, New Millennium Media International, Wagner Realty and bright house Networks, with support from participating venues including Lakewood Ranch, Newtown Community Center, Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall and the City of Sarasota. Projections screenings are free and open to the public. They will be put on rain or shine at 7:30 pm at the above locations.
