THE SARASOTA FILM FESTIVAL AND SAKS FIFTH AVENUE PRESENT: THE 1ST ANNUAL MOVING PICTURES ART AUCTION

7/21/2003

The Sarasota Film Festival presents Moving Pictures, a live auction featuring works from over 50 Sarasota-area visual artists. Hosted by Saks Fifth Avenue, the Moving Pictures Art Auction takes place Friday, July 25, 2003. Moving Pictures is a fundraising event celebrating the visual arts and the art of filmmaking. Proceeds from Moving Pictures support both the Sarasota Film Festival and participating artists. The live auction features over 50 pieces from the Sarasota area's most celebrated visual artists representing several local visual artist organizations. Each piece in the auction is accompanied by a film quote selected by the artist.
Saks Fifth Avenue serves as sponsor and host of the inaugural Moving Pictures event. The evening begins at 6 PM with a one-hour Preview complemented by cocktails and hors d'oeuvres from Michael's On East and light jazz from the Dave Martin Band. Sarasota Magazine's Jimmy Dean serves as the evening's guest auctioneer. Artwork from the Auction line-up will be on display inside Saks Fifth Avenue, Westfield Shoppingtown Southgate, beginning Monday, July 21. Select pieces will be displayed in the Saks Fifth Avenue window beginning Friday, July 11.
The Sarasota Film Festival is working with Suzette Cushman, local artist and Executive Director of Artists Helping Artists, to recruit work from as many local visual artist organizations as possible. As a result, Moving Pictures offers a unique opportunity for patrons and collectors to experience a range of art representing a variety of artists from the greater Sarasota area. Suzette Cushman is not only the art liaison, but a Moving Pictures participant as well. She signed on to the event because she saw a chance for the participating artists to reach a new audience. "This is such a great, fun idea," says Cushman, "The artists have been challenged to pair a famous movie quote with one of their pieces. I think creativity blooms from challenge. It's the unique solution to this challenge that creates great art. Plus, it adds a bit of wit to the art... something non-art collectors can appreciate, too." Film quotes include: "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore." - Network; and "Oh, isn't this the most lovely shade of pink!" - Operation Petticoat. "Everything is up for grabs," Cushman says.
Among the artists participating in the 1st Annual Moving Pictures Art Auction are: Nathan Bell, Danny Bilodeau, Jaia Chen, Nancy Colby, Ruth Höök Colby, Suzette Cushman, Alice DeCaprio, Michael Donovan, Jack Dowd, Brownie Eagan, Larry Forgard, Jamie Friedli, Victor Garcia, Barbara Harrison, Martha Hartman, Coleen Henry, Carol King, Stanislas Kostka, Ceci Kueltzo, Kathleen McDonald, James Michaels, Jini Mount, Peter Paul, David Peoples, Florence Putterman, Keiko Romerstein, Gale Fulton Ross, Chris Sittel, Elizabeth Van Riper, James West, and Joe Winchester.
Jody Kielbasa, Executive Director of the Sarasota Film Festival, is committed to fostering relationships with area artists and arts organizations, and he is especially proud of the Moving Pictures Art Auction. "As the Festival has grown," notes Kielbasa, "it has been exciting to partner with other groups and individual artists from the Sarasota community. This fundraiser is a way to bring the visual arts organizations together with the film festival and for everyone to benefit equally." Sally Schule, Assistant General Manager for Saks Fifth Avenue Sarasota, shares Kielbasa's enthusiasm for the event. "Saks Fifth Avenue is thrilled to once again support the Sarasota Film Festival," says Schule, "We hope that our customers will enjoy the art on display while visiting our beautiful store and, in turn, become more familiar with the Festival and all it offers our community."
